Mold-Making Workshop

Join us for Mold- Making workshop September 8, 2024.

We’ll take an object of your choosing and create a plaster mold where you will be able to make multiple copies with clay. Just keep in mind the more symmetrical and compact, the more successful. Undercuts are a weird thing, but you'll be fine if it's just little details that we can plug with some clay.

Designing the mold is the hardest part. Bring a few things that you might like to cast. You'll have enough plaster for about a 4x4x4" object, or some smaller ones. Besides weird fun things like rubber ducks, you can also cast things that you can use in your pottery, like handles or shells or gems. The workshop is timed so you can also use your molded objects in the raku fire, because they will be small and mostly decorative. And many copies = many experiments.

If older kids are interested, this might be a fun one. It is more advanced and will go for three hours. Some clay experience is suggested, but beginners are welcome. You can read more about the mold making process here.

Once your molds are made, they will need about a week to dry before you can pour slip and use them to make a clay copy of your item. We will have a followup workshop called “slip casting”. If you are interested in just this process, we have plenty of molds here for you to choose from. That process is described her here.
