Muddy Time Saturdays

IMG_0659.jpg

Muddy Time is our most popular class! Never touched clay before? Or perhaps you’re looking to throw clay without the commitment. No experience required and we will help you as much, or as little, as you like.

You’ll have an hour on the wheel and 2 balls of clay. The first one is often for practice, as it can become so wet and mashed potatoes that it's barely usable. If you make something amazing with the first one, awesome, we’ll put it aside and you can use the second ball to try to outdo the first pot, or get experimental.

Ceramics is very much about making mistakes as much as it is making art. Smashing a piece is just as cathartic. As long as clay is not fired, it can be recycled, so you’re not wasting anything.

$30 (plus tax) includes two balls of clay, one hour on the wheel, and the firing and glazing of one item. (If you’re in love with both of your pieces, you can fire and glaze additional pots for $15.) Our techs will do the glazing, but you’ll pick the colors you want.

Pots are ready to be picked up in about 4 weeks.

FAQ

  • You can cancel or reschedule your reservation up until noon on the day of your wheel, and receive a refund or credit. We usually have people standing by who are happy to take the opening.

  • Gift certificates are available! Scroll to the end of this page, past the calendar. If you prefer a custom amount, reach out to Amanda and we can set you up.

  • Are we really booking into September? Yes :( However, check back often, because spots do open up, sometimes very last minute.

Other ways to learn wheel throwing
We definitely want you to come check out the studio and take a class with us, but we also don’t want you to wait forever to play with clay. So here are some other places we recommend.

Janna with Isiko
We’ve known Janna almost as long as we’ve had Ceramic Heights. She worked with us for many years and we were happy/sad when she left to start her own studio in Barrio Logan. She does private lessons, and you’ll get a lot of patient instruction. You can read more about them and sign up here.

Group Classes at Teralta Art
Every Friday afternoon and Sunday morning, Teralta Art, in City Heights, holds a similar class called Wheel Time, as well as monthly workshops on different topics.

Anita with AMH Ceramics
Anita has been teaching class our Tuesday night class for years, and she now offers private lessons out of her home studio in La Mesa.

Hsin-Chuen Lin
Amanda wishes she had personal affiliation with Hsin-Chuen Lin, but he’s definitely her go-to for throwing videos. He explains everything methodically and even makes his own tools.
